Basal ganglia are located deeply within both cerebral hemispheres. Their task is to control muscle movement. Basal ganglia are affected early during the course of Neuro-AIDS. With the help of special basal ganglia tests we are able to detect the earliest signs of basal ganglia dysfunction. Such tests are helpful for an early diagnosis of brain involvement in AIDS. Since 1982, HIV is known to be neurotropic with patients having motor, cognitive and emotional deficits characterising the so-called HIV-1-associated encephalopathy.
